The Town of Colonial Beach has been issued Notices of Violation by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) concerning its Wastewater Treatment Plant and related spills. After acknowledging these violations, the Town engaged in negotiations with DEQ. Eventually, a proposed Consent Order was finalized with input from both parties. This Consent Order includes provisions for a reduced civil fine and the implementation of a Supplemental Environmental Project by the Town.

The Consent Order will be subject to a public comment period starting July 1, 2024. If no further changes are needed based on public feedback, DEQ will execute the Consent Order, making it binding for both parties. The Town Council, in a closed meeting on June 5, 2024, discussed the key aspects of the proposed Consent Order and has now voted to approve it. They have also authorized either the Mayor or the Town Manager to sign the Consent Agreement on behalf of the Town and agreed to refrain from commenting on its terms until it is released for public comment by DEQ.
